Eclipes Wooden Screw Corvettes
The Surveyor to the Royal Navy during 1863 to 1870,
Sir Edward Reid was the designer of these seven Wooden
Screw Corvettes. HMS Eclipes, Blanche, Danae, Dido,
Sirius, Spartan and HMS Tenedos. initially designed
to be Ram-bow Sloops, but were upgraded to become
Corvettes, with similarities to the Amazon class
Corvettes apart form being 25 feet longer.
HMS Eclipes was built at Sheerness Dockyard and launched
on the 14th November 1867, and completed in June
1868. her Displacement was 1755tons. and speed 12.24
Knots she was armed with Two 7 -inch MLR and four
64 Pounder MLR, later her 7-inch guns were removed
and a total of twelve 64 pounder were fitted. |

HMS Sapphire built at Palmer, at Jarrow and laid
down on the 30th March 1903, launched 17th March
1904 and completed 7th February 1905. |

Royal Navy launched in June 1896. Sister ships were
HMS Eclipse, HMS Diana, HMS Dido, HMS Doris, HMS

In 1888 the most important part of the naval programme
of the period were laid down. The Blake Class Armoured
Cruisers HMS Blake and HMS Blenheim, A Class with
the armament of The Orlando Class with greatly improved
speed secured by development in the deck armour.
Could be said to be similar to an enlarged Mersey
Class Cruiser. But these ships were unique due to
their increased length and great increase in displacement.
The main Guns were in armoured casemate's, a leading
characteristic of nearly all Sir William White's
ships made its first appearance. HMS Blenheim for
four main guns, the upper deck guns being behind

Royal Navy cruiser HMS Blake was built at Chatham
Dockyard and launched in 1889. HMS Blake served one
commission as flagship at the America and West Indies
Station during 1895 and in December of 1895 was commissioned
into the Channel Squadron commanded by Captain Bromley.
Converted to a destroyer depot ship in August 1907
after being struck of the navy list in 1906. Served
as the depot ship for the 2nd destroyer flotilla
of the Grand Fleet and then to the 11th Destroyer
flotilla. after the war was scrapped on the 9th June
1922.
History of HMS Blenheim a Blake Class Cruiser built
by Thames ironworks, and launched on 26th May 1894.
After service HMS Blenheim was used as a destroyer
depot ship from May 1908 serving with the flotillas
in the Mediterranean. |

HMS New Zealand was built by Fairfield and was completed
in February 1912. she was presented to the Royal
navy In February she left for a world cruiser around
the Dominions which took 10 months she then joined
the 1st battle Cruiser Squadron on a cruise to the
Baltic and then joined the Grand Fleet in August
1914 becoming the flagship of the 2nds Battle Cruiser
Squadron in January 1915 until February 1915. At
the Battle of Dogger Bank she fired a total of 147
12 - inch shells with out any known hits of the German
Ships. She became Flagship to Admiral Beattie when
his Flagship HMS Lion was damaged during the battle.
On the 22nd April HMS New Zealand and HMS Australia
collided but repairs were carried out in time for
the Battle of Jutland. During the battle she fired
420 shells which was more than any other dreadnaught
during the Battle but only scored 4 hits. HMS New
Zealand was also hit by a 11-inch shell which hit
X turret without any major damage or \casualties.
after September 1916 she again joined the 2nd battle
cruiser squadron and after the war Carried Admiral
Jellicoe on a tour of the Dominions. |
