Rua 31 de Janeiro is one of the main and longest streets in Funchal , Madeira , with a total length of 1972 meters. The street follows the left bank of Ribeira de Santa Luzia and has two lanes going up, while, parallel to Rua 31 de Janeiro and following the right bank of Ribeira, is Rua 5 de Outubro with two lanes going down.

During the monarchy , the street was called Rua da Princesa and commonly called Rua das Árvores . It owes its current name to the date of the first republican revolt and attempt to establish the Republic in Portugal, in Porto , on January 31, 1891.

On January 31, 1891, the first attempt to establish a Republic took place in Porto. Discontented with the economic crisis and a British-launched Ultimatum, which called into question the Portuguese presence in Africa, a group of influential northern men led dozens of soldiers toward the center of the city with the intention of taking the Post Office and Telegraphs and proclaim the Republic. They were eventually blocked by the municipal guard, faithful to the Monarchy and placed on the steps of the Church of Santo Ildefonso.

Doctor Fernao de Ornelas became mayor of Funchal in 1929. He was 27 years old, the youngest ever mayor. He was a visionary elected to revive a city that was stuck in time. While in office he modernized streets, organized economic districts, brought progressive changes to education, sanitation, and created a modern and more accessible urban layout.

Rua Do Visconte De Anadia

Born in Aveiro, Portugal, on November 11, 1755. Son of Aires de Sá e Melo, diplomat, assistant secretary of State to the Marquis of Pombal and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and War.

In Portugal, he served as nobleman serving in the Palace, nobleman-squire, lord grantee of the town of Anadia, commander of São Paulo de Maçãs, mayor of Campo Maior and member of the Finance Council. He received it from Queen D. Maria I the title of viscount of Anadia by letter of May 8, 1786, and that of count of the prince regent d. João VI , on December 17, 1808. He moved with the royal family to Brazil, where he was appointed Secretary of State for the Affairs of the Navy and Overseas Dominions , a position he held until his death, on December 30, 1809.
