Eira do Serrado is a breathtaking viewpoint located above the village of Curral das Freiras in Madeira. Known for its stunning panoramic views of the Nun's Valley (Curral das Freiras), this viewpoint offers visitors a unique perspective of the dramatic cliffs and lush landscapes that surround the valley. It is a popular spot for photography, sightseeing, and enjoying the natural beauty of Madeira.
Eira do Serrado is one of Madeira’s most dramatic viewpoints, perched high above the valley of Curral das Freiras (the “Nun’s Valley”).
About 15 km from Funchal, accessible by winding mountain roads and roughly 1,094 meters above sea level, offering sweeping views of the central mountains. From the viewpoint, you can see the deep gorge and the village of Curral das Freiras nestled far below, surrounded by towering peaks.
The valley was historically a refuge for nuns from the Santa Clara convent in Funchal, who fled inland during pirate attacks in the 16th century.
The site has a hotel and café, and a short walking trail leads to the panoramic platform. On clear days, the view is breathtaking, but mist often rolls in, adding a mystical atmosphere.
The valley below is fertile, known for chestnut trees, which became central to local cuisine and festivals. The chestnut festival held in Curral das Freiras each autumn ties natural cycles to cultural ritual, blending ecology with civic identity.
