About Avenida do Infante
Avenida do Infante is one of the best known streets in Funchal , Madeira . It starts in the downtown area of ??the city, at the roundabout with the same name, with a stretch of 390 meters with a steep incline, extends for another 500 meters on level ground and ends, after a slight descent of 40 meters, just before Ponte do Ribeiro Dry, at the beginning of Avenida Luís de Camões . On the flat part of the Avenue, it connects with Rua Tenente-Coronel Sarmento through Rua Infante Santo (built in the late 1980s, early 1990s).
The street and the roundabout where it begins owe their names to Infante D. Henrique , the promoter of the Discoveries , who has a statue by the Madeiran sculptor Francisco Franco at the roundabout where the avenue begins.
Avenida do Infante is one of the works of the Estado Novo urban intervention carried out in the city, during the mandate of Fernão de Ornelas as president of the City Council (1935-1947). Through this, the expansion of the city to the west was consummated, connecting Avenida Arriaga to Estrada Monumental (a road that follows Ponte do Ribeiro Seco).
